Title: Unit 3: Reasoning with Equations
Author & Email: Melissa Lough mlough@access.k12.wv.us and Cindy Thomas cfthomas@access.k12.wv.us
Grade Level: High School Math I
Unit Overview:

Students will be able to identify the properties of equality for real numbers.  They will recognize and use properties of equality of real numbers as reasons to justify steps when solving equations through deductive/inductive reasoning.  Students will apply these properties to solve linear equations involving one-step, two-steps, multi-steps, and equations with variables on both sides. They will extend these solving processes to linear inequalities.  Literal equations will also be solved for given variables.  Equations and inequalities will be explored with written applications. Students will be able to solve linear systems of equations by graphing, the substitution method, and elimination method.

Unit Reflection:

The standard of Reasoning with Equations focuses on the students not only being able to solve linear equations, linear inequalities, and systems of linear equations but also being able to  understand the solving as a process of reasoning that can be explained.  Can the students solve the equations and inequalities for solutions?  Can they justify their reasoning? Can they explain it to others? Can they extend the reasoning through writing activities, graphing calculator explorations, on-line interactive practice, and on-line projects?
