Content Standards and Objectives Learning Target
SC,O,ES.2.9
predict geologic activity associated with specific plate boundaries and interactions.
Predict geologic activity by looking at interactions between specific plates.
SC.O.ES.2.10
analyze modern and historical seismic information to determine epicenter location and magnitude of earthquakes.
Analyze data from modern and historical seismic activity to identify epicenters and magnitudes of earthquakes.
SC.O.ES.2.26
compare the relationship between earth processes and natural disasters with their impact on humans.
Compare how earth processes and natural disasters have impacted humans.
SC.O.ES.2.28
research energy sources and evaluate the ecological, environmental and economic cost-benefit ratio.
Research energy sources.
Evaluate the ecological, environmental and economic cost-benefit ratio.
21st Century Skills
Information and Communication Skills: 21C.O.9-12.1.TT1 - Student makes informed choices among available advanced technology systems, resources and services (e.g., global positioning software, graphing calculators, personal digital assistants, web casting, online collaboration tools) for completing curriculum assignments and projects and for managing and communicating personal/professional information.

21C.O.9-12.1.TT5 - Student uses advanced features of word processing software (e.g., outline, table of contents, index feature, draw tool, headers and footers, track changes, macros, hyperlinks to other file formats, etc.).

Thinking and Reasoning Skills: 21C.O.9-12.2.TT2 - Student collaborates with peers, experts and others to contribute to a content-related knowledge base by using technology to compile, synthesize, produce, and disseminate information, models, and other creative works.

Personal and Workplace Skills: No Data
Essential Question:

Students will use ArcGIS software to gather data concerning earthquakes, plate tectonic boundaries, location of nuclear reactors to analyze potential dangers of nuclear accident in the case of an earthquake disaster.

This lesson works best as a teacher led activity projected for the class so that they can see what to do in ArcGIS.
Skill Lesson Through Direct Instruction and Modeling: Assessing Earthquake Risk Handout
Active Literacy: The teacher will observe students as they use the ArcGIS software after initial teacher instruction.  The teacher will determine if students understand how to properly use the software and can relate it to plate tectonics and earthquakes.
Internet Required: Yes
